Pilar de la Horada has every amenity for a complete lfestyle. There is a church, schools, medical facilities, shops, bars and a well established community. All this is close to motorways, airports and beaches.
Pilar has 4 kilometres of beaches and is contrasted with its cultivated lands of vegetables and fruit trees, as well as with nature in its purest state, with animal species not often seen in other areas of the Valencian littoral.
The town has a coastline of fine sand and clear water interspersed by attractive inlets and beaches with a full range of services between small residential districts and extensive green areas. From the north to the south, the popular, urban beach Mil Palmeras, ideal for sailing enthusiasts, links up with the Rincón and Puerto inlets, the latter with a well-cared for promenade that comes alive on hot summer nights. Las Villas, the beach behind Torre Horadada marina, is the longest beach followed by small beach at La Mojón which constitutes a natural boundary with Murcia.
The river Seco is a ravine network that receives water filtrating from off of the fields. This peculiar environment is worthy of an excursion and is one on which visitors can enjoy fragrant plants such as rosemary, thyme or “lentiscos”, while white steppes and “palmettoes” border rushes and carrizales. The trail begins at El Pinar de Campoverde, a natural area that has lodgings, a camping area, a play area and informative panels explaining the flora and fauna of the region, as well as facilities for barbecues.
Another attractive tour is the water architecture route, on which it is possible to find cisterns and old wells.
Monuments:
TORRE HORADADA,
A watchtower which had the same function as the rest of the towers built along the whole littoral, to watch out for pirate raids. Around it a coastal settlement arose that later became a summer resort for the inhabitants of Orihuela, Murcia and the Vega Baja del Segura.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL- ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM,
This museum has five sections, dedicated to the environment, to fossils, numismatics and ethnology. Visitors can contemplate anything from the most typical flora of the municipality, to a collection of metals, assault weaponry, pieces from Iberian textile mills and objects made from esparto or the typical "pilareña" dress.
The "pilareña" gastronomy is similar to that of the rest of the region, where the presence of the sea marks the specialities. One can never forget rice, being the principal ingredient and protagonist of dishes elaborated with the stock of fish heads and bones, normally mullet and bream. The surrounding lands provide the fruits of the Pilar de la Horadada gastronomy, where is possible to find excellent artichokes, peppers, beans and cauliflowers. From among the highly elaborated sweet dishes "arroz con leche" ("rice pudding ") stands out, elaborated with goats milk, lemon peel and cinnamon, along with sweets such as "cordiales", "toñas", "mantecados" or "rollos de anis" and "milhojas". |
